BECCA Home
The Built Environment Climate Change Adaptation (BECCA) Wiki is an online encyclopaedia of topics which focus on climate change impacts and adaptation options for the built environment. It aims to provide practical information about climate change impacts on different types of infrastructure organisations, such as electricity generators and railways, and the various options for adapting efficiently to these impacts.
Table of contents
Audience
The key audience for the BECCA Wiki includes:
- academics and researchers working in the climate change and adaptation field, and
- engineers and related professionals in the following sectors:
- Electricity generation
- Electricity transmission and distribution
- Railways
Please note that the Wiki will be expanded to include other sectors in the future.
Wiki contents
The BECCA Wiki provides detailed informatation about the following three areas:
- The possible supply impacts of climate change on a range of built environment assets, human resources and activities.
- The possible demand impacts of climate change for specific industry sectors.
- The adaptation options that can be used to mediate against or reduce the identified supply and demand impacts on built environment assets.
The Wiki also contains a small amount of summary information on the climate change science, which may be useful to people who are new to the subject, although discussion of climate change science is not the primary purpose of the BECCA Wiki.
Wherever possible, topics and information elements also link to source documents, to provide access to more detailed information.
Finding information in the Wiki
The three content areas can be accessed using the links above, or go to the Contents lists and review the lists of all the Wiki pages, which are grouped in a variety of ways, for example by industry sector, or by the type of information each page contains. Alternatively, the Category index can be used to find topics that belong to a particular category, such as a particular type of asset or industry sector. An A-Z index of all topics is also available. Finally, it is possible to search the Wiki, using any search term of your choice.
To contribute to the BECCA Wiki and to see the full functionality, register as a user, via the link in the top right of the page banner. Please note that only a valid email address is required to register as a user.
Maintaining and expanding the Wiki
Registered users can edit most of the Wiki pages, to contribute their own expertise, add additional references or correct errors or ommissions. The Contributors drop-down menu at the top left of every screen provides information on how to edit Wiki pages, along with examples of the appropriate code structures. Editing a Wiki page is not difficult, and only requires the use of a simple coding language if you want to produce fancier formatting. Edits made by registered users can be saved but must be reviewed and approved before they will be visible to other users.
It is also hoped that registered users will expand the Wiki to other infrastructure sectors, such as water and telecommunications, by creating new pages which can be categorised and linked from existing pages.
Finding information about the Wiki
General information about the BECCA Wiki, including project timelines, policies, and licensing and governance arrangements can be found under the About BECCA drop-down menu on the top right of every Wiki page.
Project support
The development of the BECCA Wiki was supported by the Australian Government Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency
under the Australian Climate Change Adaptation Program - An Australian Government Initiative to increase the preparedness of Australia to the impacts of climate change.
The Australian Security Research Centre (ASRC) and the Research Network for a Secure Australia (RNSA) also provided early support to the project.
